The Mining and Energy Union (MEU) represents workers in coal mines, power generation, and coal ports. Our job is to fight for workers’ rights and help our members in these industries. Our Organising and Campaigning team is growing, and we are looking for the right person to join us.

The Role

The MEU has a vacancy within our team in Queensland of 8, we are looking for someone to join our Organising and Campaigning team. If you are motivated, passionate, and ready to help workers in the coal, power, and port industries, this could be the role for you. This is a full-time position where you’ll work within Queensland’s mining and energy operations and local communities. The MEU will provide you with the internal and external training and support you need to be able to carry out your role. You’ll report to the National Organising Director and work closely with the District to support our team’s efforts.

Skills and Experience

  • You will have a demonstrated commitment to trade Unionism, either through being a Union delegate or an organiser within a Union.
  • Having worked within our industries is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience with ACTU training and as a Union Organiser is desirable but not essential.

Duties

In this role, you will be involved in:

  • Accessing workplaces where our members and potential members are employed
  • Engaging with workers, recruiting new members, and building support for the union.
  • Empowering workers with education and information to improve workplace safety and productivity.
  • Planning, launching, and reviewing our campaigns to organise workers.
  • Creating communication networks within workplaces.
  • Developing workplace actions and solve workplace problems.
  • Supporting the Union’s goals and commitments to our members.

Key Selection Criteria

You will need to:

  • Share our values and be self-driven.
  • Have a genuine desire to work with others to help workers in the industry.
  • Be energetic, creative, and ready to take on a challenging role.
  • Be capable of planning, executing, and reviewing targeted campaigns.
  • Be able to lead, motivate, and develop workers, members, and workplace activists.
  • Have an ability to problem-solve and create strategies to deal with challenges.
  • Be able to educate and guide workplace leaders.
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with good computer skills (including social media).
  • Provide a National Police Check and have a current driver’s licence.
