The Mining and Energy Union was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of a fatality at Peak Downs in the early hours of Friday, 24 July.

MEU member Andreas ‘Andrew’ Loizou was killed in an interaction between a light vehicle and a haul truck, while an additional worker and first responder were both evacuated from the site. Andrew had been travelling as a passenger in the light vehicle at the time of the interaction.

Andrew was employed by Thiess at the time of the incident, which is contracted to provide labour hire services to Peak Downs operators BMA.

MEU Industry Safety and Health Representatives were quickly on site to investigate and have issued a request for the production of documents in relation to the incident including SOPs and incident reports.

MEU Queensland District officials are in the area to offer support to those effected, and a minutes silence was held at the Moranbah Memorial Wall on the afternoon of the incident.
