The Mining and Energy Union is devastated by the tragic death Paul Phillips, of a proud member who worked at United Wambo in the Hunter Valley.
The shot firer was fatally injured in an incident involving a mobile processing unit (MPU), a specialised vehicle used in blasting operations, at the operation at around 1.30 pm on Monday, 3 August.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends and workmates during this incredibly difficult time.
We also acknowledge the impact this tragedy has had on those who witnessed the incident and the broader workforce.
MEU officials and Industry Safety and Health Representatives have been on site to support members and assist with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The union will continue to work with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted and that any lessons identified are acted upon.
Every worker has the right to return home safely at the end of every shift.
The MEU will continue to support our members, the affected workforce and the worker’s loved ones in the days and weeks ahead.
