Over the past week, there have been serious allegations concerning certain individuals and branches within the Construction and General Division of the CFMEU. You may have seen media coverage regarding these allegations.
Given our Union’s previous history as a division of the CFMEU, we understand that some members may have questions about the implications for our Union. We want to assure all members that as a standalone Mining and Energy Union (MEU), it is business as usual for us. Recent events do not affect our ongoing effective operation.
In 2023, the Mining and Energy Union formally withdrew from the CFMEU and was registered as an independent organisation on 1 December 2023. This followed a democratic ballot where a majority of members participated, with 98% voting ‘yes’ to the proposed withdrawal.
The MEU stands with the broader trade union movement under the leadership of the ACTU in supporting an independent process to ensure any alleged criminal links or activities within the CFMEU Construction and General Division are thoroughly investigated and addressed.
We welcome the news that members of the Manufacturing Division of the CFMEU now have an opportunity for a ballot on their future, with the choice to pursue independence, a process embraced by Mining and Energy members last year.
We encourage MEU members to remain focused on our strong future as we continue our proud tradition of representing mining and energy workers.
In solidarity,
Tony Maher
General President
Mining and Energy Union
