Glenn Power has been elected as General Secretary of the Mining and Energy Union following a national ballot of members.
Mr Power brings more than three decades of experience representing mining and energy workers, including extensive leadership roles within the Queensland District Branch and on the MEU’s Central Council. He is currently serving as Queensland District Secretary.
General President Grahame Kelly said Mr Power’s resounding win reflected his deep experience, strong connection to members and long record of delivering outcomes for workers.
“Glenn Power has dedicated his working life to standing up for mining and energy workers,” Mr Kelly said.
“He has negotiated agreements, resolved disputes, organised workers on the ground and helped strengthen the union across Queensland and nationally. His experience will be invaluable as we continue to fight for secure jobs, fair pay and safe workplaces.”
Mr Power said he was honoured to take on the national role and is committed to delivering stable, strong leadership for members across all sectors of the union.
“Our union has always been strongest when we stand together,” Mr Power said.
“I’m focused on protecting members’ jobs, lifting standards across our industries and ensuring workers’ voices are heard, whether that’s at the bargaining table, in the workplace or in government.”
Mr Power has 36 years’ experience in the coal mining industry and more than 30 years representing MEU members.
Mr Power will begin the new role in April. He joins General President Grahame Kelly and General Vice President Stephen Smyth in the MEU national leadership team.
