Member update

November 20, 2023

Dear Members,

We have just left the Federal Court, where the date for our withdrawal from the CFMMEU has been set for Friday 1 December 2023.

Members have long expressed their overwhelming desire to establish our own Union focused entirely on the needs and interests of our members in the mining and energy industries.

Working through the legal complexities and challenges of withdrawing from our 1992 amalgamation has been a lengthy and resource-intensive process. We are pleased that this process has now come to an end and from 1 December the Mining & Energy Union will become Australia’s newest union, while retaining our long and proud history.

Members don’t need to take any action – your membership will automatically transfer to the new organisation, as will all of our workplace and District structures. However, we can all look forward to a future when we can set our own direction and priorities, without interference.

We will continue to fight for better wages, improved safety, strong communities and jobs for now and the future.

We thank Members for their patience; and we thank everyone who has contributed to this outcome, especially our outstanding legal team.

In Unity,

General Secretary Grahame Kelly & General President Tony Maher
