The Mining and Energy Union is calling on Sanjeev Gupta to convene a public Town Hall style meeting for all stakeholders connected to Tahmoor Colliery. The union says workers have been left in limbo for months, with unpaid wages, stand downs and shifting explanations from the company.
Labour hire contractors at Tahmoor were recently informed they would no longer be paid while RStar stood down more than half the mine’s workforce. Mr Gupta has claimed to have secured a significant funding package but RStar have still not been paid.
Stakeholders have also been given conflicting explanations in private conversations, including delays blamed on international holidays.
“We have had enough of the silence and private meetings where different people are told different things,” said MEU South Western District President Bob Timbs. “Workers deserve straight answers. The billionaire who controls these operations should be fronting the people he made promises to.”
The MEU is calling on Mr Gupta to outline the real status of funding, timelines for restarting operations or exiting, how contractors and workers will be paid and how he intends to restore trust.
The union wrote to Mr Gupta to formally make this request yesterday, and asked that he respond within five business days.
