MEU win! New specialist safety roles for Victorian power industry

October 8, 2026

A long-running MEU campaign to improve safety oversight in Victoria’s power industry has helped secure two dedicated roles to oversee safety within the power generation industry within WorkSafe Victoria.

The establishment of the roles follow years of advocacy by our Victorian District, who pushed for greater accountability and more specialist expertise inside the regulator after the tragic death of Yallourn worker and union delegate Graeme Edwards in a high-voltage arc flash incident in 2018.

Following the successful prosecution of EnergyAustralia Yallourn in 2023, the union continued pressing WorkSafe to strengthen its understanding of the unique hazards faced by power station workers. In 2025, WorkSafe committed to establishing two dedicated positions focused on the power generation sector, recognising the need for practical industry knowledge within the regulator.

The new roles are an important step towards ensuring safety decisions are informed by people with real-world experience in boiler operations, turbine operations and large-scale power generation environments. The positions will support inspectors, contribute to strategic safety initiatives and help improve health and safety outcomes across Victoria’s power industry.

With the transition of the coal-fired power industry continuing, the roles also provide an opportunity for experienced power workers to take their skills into a new career while helping make workplaces safer for the next generation of workers.

Applications for two ‘Senior Advisor –  Power Generation’ roles close 15 October 2026.
